Director's Corner

Greetings !!!!
It’s hard to believe that March is here and, hopefully , those cold days of winter have passed us by. But even though it was, typically, a slow season at the Museum, there was a lot of activity behind the scenes.
  • Run, Jump Fly opened on January 31 and has been very well recieved on weekends
  • We’ve added three new interns
  • Installed an interactive game highlighting the Tuskegee Airmen
  • Angie Gofredo produced a successful “ Culture & Cocktail” community event
  • Secured KXAS (Channel 5) as a sponsor for the summer exhibit as well as the current one
  • We will renew our current sponsorship for Boeing
  • Have made great strides with interaction with the Employee Resource Groups(ERG) in assisting with the various outings that have been planned this year. This group composed of the Gen Now (under 30 employees) , Harmony In Flight (employee singers) and Arts Leadership Council worked tirelessly to assist in making the “Culture and Cocktails” a memorable event. The next one will be held this spring.
  • Of course, the Saturday At the Smith program led by Lauren and Chasity began the year with the whirly gigs, stomp rockets and gliders which always is popular with kids.
If you haven’t “friended” the Museum on Facebook, try to do so. Most of our advertisements are displayed there as well as daily updates on activities. We are also located on Twitter, Instagram and Google Plus.
I can’t say it too often, but thank you, thank you, thank you for all your time in making the C.R. Smith the impressive destination it is.
Jay

Important Information

  • Inclement weather - For the safety of our volunteers, staff and customers, the museum may close due to inclement weather/road conditions. In those instances, staff will email or call the respective volunteers on those dates.
  • Inclement weather - During days of bad weather and/or road conditions when the museum remains open, please do NOT feel obligated to volunteer, instead, please just give us a call or email, so we know not to expect you.
  • If you know anyone interested in volunteering at the Museum, please have them check out the Museum's volunteer opportunity website: http://crsmithmuseum.org/support-the-museum/volunteer-opportunities/
  • Let Lauren know if you would like to be trained for our DC-3 Tour. Lauren is currently generating training PowerPoints that will be available online that you will need to learn and review. Next, you will receive hands-on training sessions.
  • Volunteer Evaluation Sheets are in each volunteer’s mailbox. Please make sure to fill this out and put it in the Volunteer Dropbox located next to the sign in sheet. This form will help us evaluate our volunteer program so we can keep improving!
  • If you need to change your schedule, need any days off, or will not be able to make it in please e-mail: info.crsmithmuseum@aa.com as soon as you know.
  • March, April, and May volunteer schedules are available at the top of the stairs, so if you’re in the building, please mark off on the calendar at the top of the stairs if you are unavailable – no need to email.
  • Please utilize the timecards in your folders as well as the book for sign-in each day. Please feel free to talk to or email Lauren.Giffin@aa.com with any questions.

What's New?

  • New artwork appears in the gallery area near the globe, it includes a caption from the artist.
  • There is now a clock at the gate counter!
  • Flight Science Demos and Builds will occur most Saturdays from 11AM to 1PM in the Hangar.
  • The new sign over the entrance to the Gate 1A Theater comes from the American Airlines Theater at 227 West 42nd Street, New York. When the company installed new signs at the theater, they offered to send one of the original signs to the Museum. The Museum had a local sign company make repairs to the sign and install it over our own theater entrance. A didactic panel with the sign’s story will be produced in the coming months.
  • The new touch screen interactive kiosk inside the history circle theater area is a work in progress. We are finalizing written content for each of the images on the kiosk and working with a design firm to adjust and correct all issues with format and content. The final version of the kiosk content should be completed in February.
  • We are working to create a pretend and dress up area near the Cessna simulator. Visitors will be able to try on a pilot hat and jacket, or a ramp agent’s vest and head phone or pretend to be a gate agent at the vintage gate counter.

Special Announcement: Planned Giving Program
